Born in Warsaw, Poland, on November 7, 1867, Marie Curie faced significant obstacles due to her gender. Denied admission to the male-only University of Warsaw, she moved to Paris to study physics and mathematics at the Sorbonne. There, she met Pierre Curie, and together they discovered the elements polonium and radium, leading to their joint Nobel Prize in Physics in 1903. Marie Curie went on to win a second Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1911 for her solo work on radium. Her groundbreaking research contributed immensely to the understanding of radioactivity, though it ultimately led to her death from prolonged exposure to radiation on July 4, 1934.
